Judge Steven H. John was born in North Augusta, South Carolina, to Joseph A. and Stephanie A. John, where he grew up through his graduation from high school. Following graduation he attended The Citadel, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science in 1975. Thereafter he attended and graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1978 and moved to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he has remained since.
Judge John was licensed to practice in the State Courts of South Carolina in 1978, admitted to practice before the U. S. District Court of South Carolina and to practice before the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1979, and admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States of America in 1987.
After graduation from law school, Judge John served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Sidney T. Floyd, Resident Circuit Judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit. Thereafter he joined a litigation firm and in 1986 he opened a solo practice in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, having an active trial practice in Civil Court, Criminal Court, and Family Court. He has been a court appointed Special Referee for Circuit Court, a court appointed Mediator, a court appointed Guardian Ad Litem, and a Certified Circuit Court Arbitrator.
Judge John was a member of the North Myrtle Beach Zoning Board from 1993 until 2001 and also served as the Pro Bono Lawyer for Horry County Disabilities and Special Needs from 1993 until 2001. He has been a member of Rotary International since 1987 where he is a Paul Harris Fellow and recipient of the Perfect Attendance Award from 1987 through the present.
Judge John was elected as Resident Circuit Judge of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit on May 30, 2001 and has served continuously since that time.
Judge John is married to Susan Watts John and has a son. Susan is employed with the Horry County Disabilities and Special Needs Agency as the Director of Family Services.
