Michael Nettles was born in Lake City, South Carolina on March 9, 1959 to E. LeRoy Nettles, Sr. and Beverly Herlong Nettles.
He grew up in Lake City, a small town in southern Florence County. He completed high school in 1977 and graduated cum laude from Wofford College in 1981, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics. Michael earned his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1984.
Following his graduation, he returned to Lake City where he joined his family in the general practice of law. He became a partner with his father, E. LeRoy Nettles, Sr., his brother, E. LeRoy Nettles, Jr., his sister, Marian D. “Missy” Nettles Jay, Elbert K. Turbeville, and Larry G. Reddeck. Michael remained a partner in this firm until his election to the bench on February 2, 2005.
Michael and his wife, Donna, have three wonderful children. Megan graduated from University of South Carolina at Aiken and is a medical intensive care nurse at Palmetto Richland in Columbia. Lauren has graduated from East Carolina University and is associated with Bala Sole Dance Company and will return to New York in January. Jason is a student at the University of South Carolina and will graduate in December, 2011.
Michael’s wife, Donna, is a Market Executive and Senior Vice-President of First Citizens Bank. She is very active in her community and family activities.
Michael is an active member of the Lake City First Baptist Church, where he serves as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and member of the Foreign Missions Team.
He enjoys travel, daily exercise, family activities and golf.
