Judge Larry B. Hyman, Jr. was born in Conway, South Carolina on April 17, 1949. His parents are Larry B. Hyman, Sr. and the late Earlene Johnson Hyman. He married the former Meredith Diane Valois of North Augusta, South Carolina on May 26, 1973 and they have two sons, B. Alex Hyman, Esq. and Jordan W. Hyman.
He attended public schools in Conway and Coastal Carolina Regional Campus of the University of South Carolina. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in l972 with a B.A. in Political Science. While at the Coastal Carolina campus he was president of the freshman class and president of the student body. He was also awarded the faculty's George C. Rodgers award as the outstanding student. In 1976 Judge Hyman received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law.
He practiced law for a brief period in Greenville, South Carolina before returning to Conway, South Carolina to take over the practice of newly elected Judge Sidney T. Floyd. For the next thirty-one years he was a sole practitioner appearing in both the civil and criminal sides of State and Federal Courts. Judge Hyman has extensive trial experience in both civil and criminal matters. His practice also involved substantial real estate and business law.
From 1984 to 1988 he was the Municipal Judge for the City of Conway. He served continuously on the Board of Directors of the Horry County Public Defender Corporation from 1990 until 2008 and was its chairman for ten years. He also was the District Representative to the Horry County Parks and Open Spaces Board from 2005 to 2008.
Judge Hyman and Meredith have been active members of Trinity United Methodist Church for over thirty years. He teaches Sunday school in the senior men's class and has served on numerous committees including Pastor Parish Relations and Trustees. The Fraternal Order of Police awarded him its Life Saving Medal in 1994. He was featured in the Sun News newspaper's People Caring About People series.
The Judge is an avid water-fowler who enjoys his labrador retrievers and making custom duck calls. He was recently featured in James Flemmings book, Custom Callmakers. During his vacation time he is usually found on his farm in Saskatchewan, Canada.
