Beautiful farmland, growing neighborhoods, and peaceful lake views are part of everyday life for Greenwood County residents. Located roughly 60 miles south of Greenville, South Carolina, Greenwood has small city and country living, with the convenience of large city amenities. Greenwood County was established in 1897, and was created from portions of Abbeville and Edgefield Counties. Greenwood covers app. 455 square miles, with the City of Greenwood covering app. 15 square miles. The City of Greenwood is one of the larger cities in the piedmont area, and was incorporated in 1857. The county consists of 12 different cities, towns and communities: Bradley, Callison, Cokesbury, Coronaca, Greenwood, Hodges, Kirksey, Ninety Six, Promised Land, Troy, Verdery, and Ware Shoals. The population of Greenwood County in 2001 was 66,271. A haven for any hobbyist or leisure seekers, Greenwood has something for everyone. For the golfer, Greenwood County offers nearly a dozen private and public courses and practice facilities. Lake Greenwood is a popular destination for boaters and fishermen from all over the state, while campers enjoy the Greenwood State Park and the Sumter National Forest. The annual flotilla on Lake Greenwood, held during Greenwood's Festival of Flowers, is just one of many events sponsored by the community. Park Seed is a visual delight for gardeners. This national mail order company is famous for sending tomato seeds into space for NASA. The Greenwood Community Theatre's productions quench anyone's thirst for the stage arts, while the museum next door educates about our county and state history. A trip to the Ninety Six National Historic Site is a must for any history buff. The first Revolutionary War site south of New England, it offers a tour of old battlegrounds, campsites, and roads used during the Revolutionary War. Greenwood County boasts several industries, including Fuji Photo Film, Velux, Brunner Manufacturing, Cutler-Hammer/Eaton, Capsugel, and Anderson Metals. The Greenwood City/County Planning Department is working on a number of projects that create a favorable environment for industry and economic development. There are also many programs in use to enhance the local environment, such as the Palmetto Pride Governor's Council on Beautification and a State Beautification Grant from Gov. Jim Hodges. To make the community safer, Greenwood County is involved in The National Weather Service program called "Storm Ready". Participants in this program train to observe severe weather, and will enable residents to obtain better insurance rates. A state-of-the-art E-911 system was recently completed, and enables better response to emergencies. Greenwood is also very proud of our local education system, and is home to Lander University and Piedmont Technical College. Pinecrest Elementary recently scored 100% in the "No Child Left Behind Program", and Lakeview Elementary was named a "Red Carpet School" for providing an inviting environment for students. |
