Judge Alex Kinlaw, Jr. was born on November 30, 1952 to Rev. Alex Kinlaw, Sr. and Corine Giles Kinlaw of Georgetown, South Carolina.
He attended Howard High School and graduated with honors from Winyah High School in Georgetown, South Carolina in 1971. He later attended the University of South Carolina and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1975. He received his Juris Doctorate Degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1978 and also graduated from the National College of Criminal Defense Lawyers in1981.
From 1978-1980 Judge Kinlaw worked as an attorney with the South Carolina Legal Services Program in Greenville County and was instrumental in the creation of satellite offices in Greenwood and Anderson Counties. From 1980-1981 he worked as Assistant Public Defender for Greenville County and during his tenure there he became a Death Penalty Certified Defense Attorney and has handled five death penalty cases as lead Counsel during his 30 year legal career.
Judge Kinlaw is a member of the South Carolina Bar, Greenville County Bar and National Bar Association and Donald James Sampson Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in all South Carolina Courts, the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina and U.S. Supreme Court. He has served as Board Chairman of the Legal Services Agency of Western Carolina, Greenville, Urban League and Housing Board of the Urban League of the Upstate. Judge Kinlaw has also served in the Greenville County Mental Health Board and Greenville Cultural Exchange Board. He is also a member of the Alpha Phil Alpha Fraternity and Sigma Psi Fraternity. He is a member of the Reedy River Missionary Baptist Church where he served as Trustee. He is married to the former Yvette Wiggins and they have two sons, Brandon and Alex III.
In February 2009 the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina elected Attorney Alex Kinlaw, Jr. to Judge of the Family Court of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit, Seat # 6.
