Judge James A. Spruill, born on May 31, 1944, grew up in Cheraw, South Carolina. His parents were James Spruill, for many years a Circuit Court Judge in this state, and Eleanor Duvall Spruill who was an artist.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill in 1965. He had participated in NROTC while in college and went directly into the Navy where he served until 1967. He attended the University of South Carolina Law School from 1967 to 1970 graduating Cum Laude in 1970 having been a member of the Wig and Robe Society and the editorial board of the law review.
His first legal work was as clerk to Honorable Robert W. Hemphill, U.S. District Judge from 1970 to 1971. Subsequently he practiced as an associate to Frank L. Taylor in Columbia and then in a general practice in Cheraw, South Carolina until his election as Family Court Judge for the 4th Judicial Circuit in 1989. He has served in that position continuously since his first election.
Judge Spruill is a past president of the Cheraw Rotary Club. He is a member of Saint David's Episcopal Church in Cheraw. He is married to the former Sarah Cain of Darlington. They have two daughters, one an architect and the other a lawyer, both 2000 graduates.
