Judge Georgia Vaught Anderson is a native of the Palmetto State. The daughter of Winston W. Vaught, Sr. and Roena Cox Vaught, she was born July 17, 1952 at Loris, South Carolina, and resided in Horry County until moving to Columbia in 1974. Following her graduation from Conway High School in 1970, she enrolled at the Coastal Carolina Campus of the University of South Carolina and was the first graduate of this institution to have completed all academic requirements on the Coastal Campus, receiving an Associate Degree in Arts in 1972 and Bachelor in General Studies, cum laude, in 1974. While there, she served as Student Government President and yearbook editor, and was a recipient of the George C. Rogers Award for Outstanding Service and the Faculty Award for General Excellence.
Upon graduation, Judge Anderson moved to Columbia, S.C. where she worked with the South Carolina Department of Parks and Recreation, Welcome Center Division. Deciding that she would like to follow in the footsteps of her father, Horry County's first Family Court Judge, she applied to law school, and began her legal career in the fall of 1975 at the University of South Carolina School of Law. During her law school days she gained legal experience as a page in the S.C. Senate, a clerk in the Law School Library and as a law clerk in the Fifth Circuit Solicitor's Office. Judge Anderson received her J.D. in May 1978, and was admitted to the South Carolina Bar on November 8, 1978.
Spartanburg became Judge Anderson's new home following her marriage to law school classmate, David F. Anderson on December 2, 1978. They are the parents of a son and two daughters. The family attends Trinity Methodist Church where Judge Anderson is a member of the Handbell Choir. David has a private law practice and serves as an Associate Probate Judge for Spartanburg County. Judge Anderson enjoys spending her time away from court doing things with her family, especially attending her children's orchestra concerts and sporting events. Favorite vacation spots for the Anderson family are Edisto Beach and the Waccamaw River.
Judge Anderson served as an assistant public defender for Spartanburg County from 1978 until she transferred to the Spartanburg County Solicitor's Office in 1983. After a brief stint as an assistant solicitor she was appointed as a full-time county magistrate in October 1983 where she served until beginning her Family Court position in July, 1995.
