Judge Alvin D. Johnson was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on June 18, 1961. He is the son of the late Broadus C. Johnson, a retired truck driver and farmer, and Margie P. Johnson, a homemaker. He has two brothers and two sisters. He is married to the lovely Alma Virginia Urcuyo of Leon, Nicaragua. They live in the city of Pickens. He has three beautiful children.
Judge Johnson was raised in the Town of Campobello in northern Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He attended public school in Campobello and Landrum, South Carolina, and graduated Landum High School in 1979. Subsequently, he entered North Greenville College in Tigerville, South Carolina. While at North Greenville College, he was elected as President of the Student Government Association. Also, he was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. In 1981, Judge Johnson graduated from North Greenville with an associate' s degree in General Studies. After leaving North Greenville, Judge Johnson attended Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. In 1983, he received his bachelor's degree in history and government, summa cum laude, from Wofford College. He was also inducted into Wofford's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Upon graduation, Judge Johnson received the Academic Major Award in government. During his college years, Judge Johnson worked at Carolina Emblem Company in Campobello, South Carolina. After graduation from Wofford, he attended the University of South Carolina School of Law where he received his juris doctorate degree in 1986.
After graduation from law school, Judge Johnson joined the law firm of Acker, Acker, Floyd and Welmaker in Pickens, South Carolina. In 1991, he was made a partner in the firm and it was known as Acker, Welmaker, Floyd and Johnson. In 1989, he was elected President of the Pickens County Bar Association and served in this capacity until 1991.
In February of 1996, Judge Johnson was elected by the South Carolina General Assembly to the position of Resident Family Court Judge for the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit. He has served in this position continuously until the present date. His resident chambers are in Pickens, South Carolina.
Judge Johnson is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association and the Pickens County Bar Association. He has been a member of the American Bar Association and the South Carolina Trial Lawyers' Association. He is admitted to practice in all South Carolina courts and the United States District Court for the District of South Carolina.
Judge Johnson is a past member of the Pickens-Liberty Lion's Club and the Pickens Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was elected to the Board of Trustees of North Greenville College by the South Carolina Baptist Convention in November of 1991 for a five-year term and re-elected in 1998 to another five-year term. On October 9, 1992 he was presented the Alumni Service Award by the North Greenville College and in 2003 he was presented with the college’s Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award.
