Judge Robert S. Armstrong was born in Laurens, South Carolina on August 12, 1956. His parents are the late Catherine Sitgreaves Jefferies, and the late James Robert Armstrong.
He attended public schools in Laurens, and received his bachelor’s degree in 1978 from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina. He graduated from USC School of Law in 1982.
After law school, he was the law clerk to the Honorable William T. Howell from 1982 to 1983. He was then selected as the first Public Defender for Allendale, Hampton, and Jasper counties and served from 1983 until 1985. For the next ten years he was an Assistant, then Deputy Solicitor in the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit. Prior to his election as judge on May 6, 1998, he was in private practice for three years.
Since his election to the Bench, he has served on the Family Court Judges Advisory Committee from 2006-2009. He was the President of the South Carolina Conference of Family Court Judges from 2008-2009. He has also served on the Chief Justice’s Commission on the Profession.
Judge Armstrong is married to the former Lisa Kimbrough. He has four children.
