Judge Dorothy Mobley Jones was born in Union, South Carolina, on October 7, 1952, and grew up in Columbia where she attended A. C. Flora High School. Her parents are Louise Setzler Mobley and the late Foster Evans Mobley.
She graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1974 with a bachelor’s degree in education. Dottie taught English and French classes at Newberry High School for one year before attending the University of South Carolina School of Law. She received her juris doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1978.
Judge Jones had the privilege of serving as a law clerk to the Honorable Rodney A. Peeples, retired, Circuit Court Judge of the Second Judicial Circuit from 1978 - 1979. She then entered private practice with the firm of Yarborough, Fallon & Mobley in Florence. After engaging in a general practice of law including civil and criminal cases, she practiced for several years in the area of medical malpractice and product liability actions. Since 1983, she enjoyed an exclusively domestic statewide practice until her election in February 2005.
She is a member of the SC Bar, Richland Bar, Horry Bar, South Carolina Trial Lawyer’s and South Carolina’s Women Association. Dottie received recognition in Best Trial Lawyers in America for 2005-2006. She has moderated and participated as a guest lecturer in numerous continuing legal seminars sponsored by the SC Bar for the past 18 years including the annual “Hot Tips” seminars for domestic practitioners. She also served as a past chair and member of the Family Law Executive Council and a member of Judicial Qualifications Committee. During her private practice, she taught legal courses at Coastal Carolina University and Horry-Georgetown Technical College.
Judge Jones has one child and attends Shandon Baptist Church.
