W. Thomas (Tommy) Sprott, Jr. was born in 1945 in Winnsboro, SC and is a lifelong resident of Winnsboro. He is the son of W. Thomas Sprott and Nelle McMaster Sprott. His father, who is now deceased, was a general overseer with Uniroyal Corp., formerly US Rubber Co, and later secretary/treasurer of Mid-County Water Company. His mother was a public school music teacher and church organist, and was fairly well known as she was commissioned by the South Carolina Bicentennial Commission to write a series of songs which were sung by all of the elementary school children statewide.
He is a 1963 graduate of Winnsboro High School, a 1967 graduate of Clemson University, and a 1973 graduate of Tulane University School of Law where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity. He served in the Army from 1968 until 1973, his last year being in Vietnam where he won two bronze stars and the combat medical badge.
He practiced law in Winnsboro after graduation. He was a municipal judge for the Town of Winnsboro for seventeen years, frequently served as a Special Referee, and served as a Temporary Administrative Law Judge for one year. He was the County Attorney for six years. He served a Secretary and President of the Fairfield County Bar Association, Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline, Fee Dispute Board, and Public Defender Board.
He has served as president of the Winnsboro Rotary Club, president of the Winnsboro Cotillion, secretary of the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Fairfield County Library Commission, Board of Directors of Richard Winn Academy, Secretary of the Mount Sion Society, President of the Fairfield County Arts Council, Chairman of the United Way for Fairfield County, and Winnsboro Planning and Zoning Commission.
Judge Sprott is married to the former Jeanne Frost Wardlaw of Columbia. They have one son, William Richard Sprott. He took a sabbatical with his family on their sailboat beginning in 1996. They spent the last month hiking in the French and Swiss Alps. He enjoys sailboat racing, hiking and music.
