Thirty-four
magistrates attended a five day intensive training seminar at Trident
Technical College in Charleston from May 5-9, 2003. In addition, five
municipal judges participated in the one day training on criminal law on
Wednesday. Court Administration in conjunction with the Magistrates Advisory
Council developed this training seminar as provided in the Magistrates Reform
Act. Chief Justice Jean Toal noted in her remarks to the group that this
is an historical occasion, since it marks the first intensive training for
magistrates since the Reform Act has become law. Court Administration
will continue this training with one day training sessions over the next
several months. Summary court judges interested in pursuing this
